Creative Halloween Costumes Using Everyday Clothes

Trick-or-Treating is right around the corner and we are ready! Candy and costumes, here we come… but costumes can get expensive, and you usually only use them once. On top of that, they take time to plan and execute.

But never fear, Hamrick’s is here! Everyday items can be all you need for funny, punny, and riddle-y costumes that will keep people on their toes! Check out these creative Halloween costumes that require nothin’ fancy:

Best for a group of 2 or more:

These punny costumes add in the fun of watching “treat-ers” guess what you are:

Caesar Salad

Person 1: Caesar: a white sheet wrapped like a toga and a wreath or headband for a crown. Person 2: Salad: an oversized white t-shirt covered with lettuce and tomatoes (you can use paint pens or tissue paper to save on the grocery bill).

Black-Eyed Peas (the legume or the band – your pick!)

Person 1 and 2 or more: Black t-shirt with the letter “P.” Cut it from white paper or felt and safety-pin it on the shirts or draw P’s with fabric paint. Then, add face paint or eyeliner to surround one eye with a big black splotch.

Green with Envy

Person 1: plain green t-shirt. Person 2: white t-shirt with the word “envy” painted on the shirt.

Trés Leches (best for a trio of trick-or-treaters)

Person 1: plain white t-shirt with the word “skim” written on it. Person 2: plain white t-shirt with the word “whole” written on it. Person 3: plain white t-shirt with the word “2%” written on it.

The IRS

Persons 1, 2, and 3: each in a button down white shirt, black pants, a skinny black tie, and carrying a briefcase (if you want to make it easier to guess, cut out the letters I, R, S and tape one to each briefcase).

And now some ideas for the individualists:

A Burglar

Black pants, black and white striped shirt, white tote bag with a dollar sign drawn on it, and black eye mask. (Have a partner dress as a cat to double the fun and go as a Cat Burglar!)

Tourist

A colorful or floral button down, sandals, a big-brimmed sun hat. Bonus points for lanyard, passport holder, or sunscreen on your nose!

Minion (from Despicable Me)

Yellow shirt or sweater, denim overalls, black socks, shoes, and gloves.

Mr. Fredricksen (from Up)

Khaki pants, suspenders, a white shirt (preferably stuffed), a bowtie, big black glasses, and a handful of multi-colored balloons.

Charlie Brown Ghost

White sheet with black felt dots attached all over it and a brown paper bag (for tick-or-treating). Don’t forget to cut eye holes!

101 Dalmatians (extra fun in a group!)

White long-sleeve shirt, white tights or leggings, cover ‘em both with black spots (either paint them on or cut out black felt spots).
